ADHD medication

For many with ADHD, medication works like glasses for the brain: focus improves, impulses calm, and it becomes easier to do what you know works. We help you understand the options, find the right dose, and follow up safely.

What is ADHD medication?

ADHD medicines raise neurotransmitters like dopamine and noradrenaline. The result can be longer focus, less hyperactivity, better impulse control, and fewer executive difficulties. Medication doesn’t cure ADHD, but it can create conditions for routines, calm work, and better self-care while you use it.

“The right medication isn’t a quick fix — it’s support so you can use the strategies you already know help, with fewer hurdles.”

In treatment we consider:

  • Medical history, co-occurring conditions, and current medicines or supplements.
  • Your goals: focus at work, studies, family life, or emotion regulation.
  • Any previous medication experiences and side effects.

We work with both stimulant and non-stimulant options. When needed we combine with, for example, antidepressants according to evidence and in dialogue with you.

How it works

From evaluation to stable dosing

We follow a clear process with safety in focus. You’re involved at every step.

1

Initial assessment

We review history, goals, any risk factors, and past medication trials.

  • Review of records, ECG, or labs if needed.
  • Plan for any complementary assessments.
2

Titration

We start low and adjust weekly or biweekly based on effect and side effects.

  • Ratings and journals between visits help us spot patterns.
  • We explain what’s normal and when to contact us.
3

Stabilization

When a dose works, we follow up on how it affects daily life, sleep, appetite, and mood.

  • Adjust timing or combine with non-stimulants if helpful.
4

Long-term follow-up

We plan regular check-ins and annual reviews to ensure continued benefit.

  • Review goals, side effects, and any documentation needs.
  • Plan for breaks or life changes if relevant.
Next steps

Ongoing support and coordination

Once the medication is set, we follow up at the pace you need. You can book booster visits before school terms, life changes, or if you want to review the dose.

We can also coordinate with your GP or other psychiatry services if ongoing care will be transferred once stable.

Shared care

We help with letters and communication when public care is taking over follow-up.

Combined support

Coordination with coaching, therapy, or occupational therapy so efforts move in the same direction.

Annual check-in

Review of effect, side effects, and life goals to make sure treatment is still right.

Frequently asked questions

What types of ADHD medication exist?

The most common are stimulants based on methylphenidate or amphetamine. There are also non-stimulant options such as atomoxetine or alpha-2 agonists. In some cases medication is combined with antidepressants that affect dopamine and noradrenaline.

What if the first medicine doesn’t work?

We adjust the dose stepwise and often try several medicines or combinations. The goal is good effect without troublesome side effects — sometimes patience is needed to find the right fit.

Do I need to pause the medicine?

Some plan weekend or summer breaks, but it’s not required. We decide together based on how you feel, side effects, and upcoming activities.

Is it safe if I take other medicines?

Always tell us about prescription or over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and caffeine products you use. We check interactions and adjust the plan so the combination is safe.
